The short answer
Art above a sofa looks right when it is two thirds to three quarters as wide as the sofa: 56 to 63 in (142 to 160 cm) over a standard 84 in sofa. Hang it with its bottom edge about 8 in above the sofa back, and count a pair or trio as one piece, gaps included.
The wall above a sofa is the spot most often hung too small. A modest print that looked large in the shop shrinks to a postage stamp over seven feet of upholstery. One rule of thumb fixes it.
The two-thirds rule
Most designers size art above furniture at two thirds to three quarters of the furniture’s width. Narrower than two thirds and the picture looks timid; wider than three quarters and it crowds the arms of the sofa. For a standard 84 in (213 cm) sofa that means art 56 to 63 in (142 to 160 cm) wide, with about 59 in as a comfortable middle.
Measure the sofa from arm to arm, not the seat cushions. If the sofa sits under a window or between two doors, measure the wall space too: the art should also leave a hand’s width or more of wall on either side.
Widths for common sofas
| Sofa width | Art width | Ideal | Each of a pair |
|---|---|---|---|
| 60 in (152 cm) | 40 to 45 in (102 to 114 cm) | 42 in | 19 to 21 in |
| 72 in (183 cm) | 48 to 54 in (122 to 137 cm) | 50 in | 23 to 26 in |
| 84 in (213 cm) | 56 to 63 in (142 to 160 cm) | 59 in | 27 to 30 in |
| 96 in (244 cm) | 64 to 72 in (163 to 183 cm) | 67 in | 31 to 35 in |
The pair column allows 3 in (8 cm) between the two frames.
How tall it should be
Height matters less than width, but it has a ceiling, literally. Keep the art no taller than about two thirds of the wall between the sofa back and the ceiling. With a 34 in sofa back and an 8 ft ceiling, that is about 41 in (104 cm). Landscape and panoramic shapes sit naturally over a long sofa; a square piece works if it is large.
Standard print sizes that fit
Widths here include a 1¼ in frame on every side, since the frame is part of what you see.
- 60 in sofa: a 30 × 40 in print with no mat (42½ in framed), or a 24 × 36 in print with a 2 in mat.
- 72 in sofa: a 36 × 48 in print (50½ in framed), or a 30 × 40 in print with a 3 in mat.
- 84 in sofa: a 36 × 48 in print with a 3 in mat (56½ in framed), a panoramic 20 × 60 in print, or a pair of 24 × 36 in portrait prints, which come to 56 in across with the gap.
- 96 in sofa: no single standard size is wide enough, so choose a pair of 30 × 40 in prints, a pair of 24 × 36 in prints with mats, or a panoramic print.
The 24 × 36 in poster size is the workhorse here: on its own it suits a loveseat, and as a pair it fills an 84 in sofa. The art size calculator runs these numbers for your own sofa, in inches or centimeters, and shows the paintings whose shape fits each size.
Pairs and trios
A set counts as one piece, gaps included. Two 27 in frames with 3 in between make a 57 in arrangement, right in range over an 84 in sofa. Keep the gap the same between every frame, line up the tops and bottoms, and choose works that share a palette or a subject so they read as a set. The sets of paintings for the living room are grouped that way already.
Which way up
Landscape (wider than tall) is the natural shape over a sofa, because it echoes the sofa’s own long line. Portrait works belong in pairs or trios. A very wide panoramic painting, a river view or a harbor, can be the most striking choice of all over a long sofa.
Where to find the paintings
Paintings above the sofa lists the works in the collection whose shape and real size suit this spot, each with its print sizes and a mock-up over a sofa drawn to scale. If the room has a strong color, the wall color matcher narrows them down further.
Questions people ask
Can I hang a portrait-format painting above a sofa?
Yes, as a pair or a trio. One tall painting over a long, low sofa looks like an exclamation mark; two or three side by side make the wide shape the sofa asks for.
My art is too small for the sofa. What can I do?
Add width around it: a generous mat and a wider frame can add 6 in or more. Or make it a pair with a second work of similar size and palette, or flank it with two small pieces.
How far above the sofa should the art hang?
About 8 in (20 cm) from the top of the sofa back to the bottom of the frame. Anywhere from 6 to 10 in works; keep it close enough that sofa and picture read as one arrangement.
