Hanging height guide
Galleries center a painting 57 to 60 in from the floor. Here is how that rule works on a bare wall, above a sofa, up the stairs and at the dining table, and where the hook goes.
- Center
- 58 in (147 cm) from the floor
- Bottom edge
- 43 in (109 cm) from the floor
- Top edge
- 73 in (185 cm) from the floor
- Hook
- 70 in (178 cm) from the floor: center + half the frame height − 3 in wire drop
- Above the sofa
- 9 in (23 cm) from the sofa back to the frame, with the center at eye level.
Drawn to scale. The band marks eye level; the brass dot is the hook.
The rules in plain words
On a bare wall
Center the painting 57 to 60 in (145 to 152 cm) from the floor. That is roughly the eye level of an adult standing, and it is the number most galleries use (58 in is common). It holds whatever the ceiling height: a tall wall calls for a bigger painting, not a higher one.
Above a sofa, bed, console or desk
The furniture wins. Keep the bottom of the frame 6 to 10 in (15 to 25 cm) above the top of the furniture, about 8 in usually, so the two read as one arrangement. If the 58 in center already puts the frame in that window, keep it; if not, set the gap and let the center move. Above a mantel the gap can be smaller, 4 to 8 in, because the mantel already lifts the art.
Up a staircase
Measure from the stairs, not the floor: center each piece 57 to 60 in above the nosing of the tread directly below it. The frames then climb in a line parallel to the handrail.
In a room used sitting down
In a dining room or a reading corner, people look at the art from a chair, so drop the center a little, to 54 to 57 in (137 to 145 cm).
Where the hook goes
Hook height = the center + half the frame height − the wire drop. The wire drop is the distance from the top of the frame to its wire pulled taut (or to the D-rings, if there is no wire). For a 24 in frame centered at 58 in with a 3 in drop: 58 + 12 − 3 = 67 in.
- Measure the frame. Measure the framed piece from top to bottom, frame included.
- Measure the wire drop. Pull the hanging wire up taut, the way the hook will hold it, and measure from the top of the frame down to the wire. With D-rings and no wire, measure from the top of the frame to the rings.
- Choose the center. On a plain wall, center the piece 57 to 60 in from the floor (58 is the usual gallery number). Above furniture, keep the bottom edge 6 to 10 in above it instead. On stairs, measure the 57 to 60 in from the nosing of the tread below.
- Work out the hook height. Hook height = the center + half the frame height − the wire drop.
- Mark, level and hang. Mark the hook height on the wall, check it with a level, set the hook, and hang. Two hooks a few inches apart keep a wide frame level.
Heights for common frames
Inches from the floor, with a 3 in wire drop. Above the sofa assumes a 34 in (86 cm) sofa back and the 8 in gap.

Questions people ask
How high should I hang a picture?
Center it 57 to 60 in (145 to 152 cm) from the floor; galleries use 58 in, about the eye level of an average adult standing. Above furniture, keep the bottom edge 6 to 10 in above the furniture instead, even if that moves the center.
How do I work out where the nail goes?
Take the center height, add half the frame height, and subtract the distance from the top of the frame to the taut wire. A 24 in tall frame centered at 58 in with a 3 in wire drop needs the hook at 58 + 12 − 3 = 67 in.
How high above a sofa should a picture hang?
About 8 in (20 cm) above the sofa back, anywhere from 6 to 10 in. Closer and it looks wedged in; much higher and it floats away from the sofa.
How high do I hang pictures on stairs?
Center each piece 57 to 60 in above the nosing of the tread directly below it, so the frames climb in a line parallel to the stairs.
Should I hang art higher with high ceilings?
No. Eye level does not change with the ceiling. Fill a tall wall with a larger piece or a group, keeping the center near 58 in.
