The short version
- There are no accounts, no sign-up or contact forms, no email list and no advertising.
- We count visits with Cloudflare Web Analytics, which does not use cookies.
- Your theme, wall color and inch or centimeter choices are saved in your own browser.
- Large painting images load from the servers of the museums that hold the paintings.
Hosting and server logs
Room Paintings is hosted on Cloudflare. Like any web host, Cloudflare receives the standard information your browser sends with each request: your IP address, the page asked for, the time, your browser’s user-agent and the page that linked you here. It keeps this in server logs for security, troubleshooting and to keep the site running. Cloudflare describes how it handles this information in its privacy policy.
We don’t set cookies of our own. If the host’s security checks need to tell people apart from automated traffic, it may set a short-lived security cookie for that purpose.
Visit counts
We use Cloudflare Web Analytics to count page views and see which pages are read and how quickly they load. It is a privacy-focused tool: it does not use cookies or browser storage, and it does not follow you across other websites. It records the page you visited, the page that referred you, your browser and device type, and your country.
Preferences saved in your browser
Three settings are kept in your browser’s local storage so pages look the way you left them:
rp-theme: light or dark, if you chose one with the theme buttons.rp-wall: the wall color you picked on the wall color rail.rp-unit: inches or centimeters, if you switched units in the art size calculator.
These are not cookies, and your browser does not send them to us with page requests. You can remove them at any time by clearing this site’s data in your browser settings.
Images from museums
The large image on each painting page, and the files offered for download, load directly from the servers of the museum that holds the work, such as the National Gallery of Art or The Metropolitan Museum of Art. That museum’s servers receive the request for the image, including your IP address and this site’s address as the referring site. Each museum’s own privacy policy covers those requests. The small preview images are served from this site.
Search
The search box sends the words you type to this site in the page address, the way any link does, so they appear in the host’s server logs like any other page request. The search page then matches them against a list of titles, artists and rooms that it loads from this site.
What we don’t do
- No accounts, and nothing to sign in to.
- No newsletter or email list.
- No advertising and no advertising trackers.
- We don’t sell personal information.
Changes
If we add anything that changes this picture, such as links that earn a commission, we will update this page before it goes live and change the date at the top.
